Speaker Bio
Ryan Straughn is an applied economist whose career has been shaped by a simple belief: economic policy must deliver meaningful results for people. Throughout his public service, he has focused on turning complex economic challenges into practical solutions that expand opportunity, strengthen public services, and improve the lives of Barbadians.

As Minister of Finance, he has been a key architect of one of the most significant periods of economic reform in Barbados' modern history. His work on the Barbados Economic Recovery and Transformation Programme centred on debt restructuring, restoring fiscal stability, and rebuilding confidence in Barbados' economic future.

That experience informed his engagement on climate finance, where Barbados has become one of the most consequential small-state voices in the world. Minister Straughn has represented Barbados at international forums arguing for reform of the global financial architecture to better serve climate-vulnerable nations. In November 2024, he assumed the role of Co-Chair of the Global Shield against Climate Risks, a joint G7 and V20 initiative designed to close the financial protection gap for the world's most vulnerable countries.
He has also pushed for that same accountability closer to home. He introduced a dedicated Special Needs Grant for persons with disabilities, reflecting his view that economic performance only matters if people feel it in their daily lives.

Outside of government, he serves with the Waterford Music and Cultural Society, supporting youth development and the arts in his community.
The good people of Christ Church East Central have elected him to Parliament three times, in 2018, 2022, and 2026. That kind of sustained confidence from the people he represents says more than any other title could.
